Elaine Fitzback Davies is working on her PhD in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Wales in Lampeter, where her dissertation is on the topic Why are Marian icons used for protection?. Marian icons have been venerated as palladiums, protectors of households, and spiritual protectors. She is looking at a variety of influences including theological, mariological, psychological, and sociological influences. Working under the supervision of Dr. Andreas Andreopoulos, an orthodox Christian theologian, she hopes to finish in early 2011. (12/2009)
